Rega has unveiled the Replay, a new entry-level turntable designed to make vinyl listening more accessible to newcomers without compromising on sound quality.

Developed over three years, the Replay is positioned below the award-winning Planar 1 as the British audio manufacturer’s most affordable turntable. Rega describes the new model as an “audiophile gateway drug”, promising a straightforward plug-and-play experience that removes much of the complexity traditionally associated with setting up a record player.

Despite its entry-level positioning, the Replay borrows several key components from the Planar 1, including a phenolic resin platter with a flywheel effect, Rega’s RB110 tonearm and a factory-fitted Carbon moving magnet cartridge.

However, the biggest departure from Rega’s existing turntables is its unconventional design.

Rather than using a traditional rectangular plinth, the Replay features a minimalist skeletal structure inspired by the company’s more expensive Planar 8 and Planar 10 models.

The reduced footprint helps keep the turntable’s total weight down to just 2.2kg, while its laminated plinth combines a high-rigidity construction with a lightweight MDF core.

According to Rega, the approach reflects its long-standing philosophy that excessive mass can introduce unwanted resonances and reduce the natural energy of music.

The turntable also incorporates a redesigned motor module positioned beneath the main pulley. This houses the power input, power switch and a new ventilated circuit board, while doubling as one of the Replay’s three supporting feet.

Although the Replay retains a manual belt-drive mechanism, Rega has simplified the setup process considerably.

Unlike conventional turntables that require users to carefully balance the tonearm and adjust tracking force and anti-skating settings, the Replay comes largely preconfigured.

Users simply need to push the tonearm’s counterweight fully into position, with Rega claiming the turntable can be assembled and ready to play records in less than a minute.

The Replay also includes a distinctive white platter mat featuring two different surface textures, one of which is designed to improve grip against the textured platter.

A minimalist dustcover is supplied as standard, replacing the more traditional full-size hinged lid found on many turntables.

With its lightweight construction, simplified setup and components borrowed from more expensive models, the Replay represents Rega’s latest attempt to introduce a new generation of listeners to vinyl playback.

The Rega Replay costs £259 in the UK. Australian availability and pricing have not yet been announced.
