Qualcomm Unveils The World’s First 5GHz CPU For Smartphones
Qualcomm has unveiled its next generation of flagship smartphone processors, introducing the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.
The two chips are designed to power the next wave of high-end Android smartphones, with the Extreme model adding upgraded AI, graphics, video and system capabilities on top of the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6.
At the heart of both platforms is Qualcomm’s latest custom Oryon CPU. The new architecture pushes Prime core speeds as high as 5.0GHz, while Performance cores reach up to 4.0GHz and are supported by 16MB of Oryon Flex Cache. Qualcomm describes it as the world’s first 5GHz mobile CPU — a notable milestone given that smartphone processors only recently began pushing beyond the 3GHz mark.
Raw performance isn’t the only focus, however. Qualcomm has significantly expanded the AI capabilities of the platform with a redesigned Hexagon NPU featuring a new Element Accelerator. The company says the hardware is designed to help AI agents understand personal context across devices, anticipate user needs and adapt over time.

Those capabilities also enable features such as “zero prompt” photo editing, allowing users to make certain image adjustments without having to manually enter detailed instructions.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 takes the AI capabilities further, supporting Mixture of Experts models with more than 30 billion parameters and offering 50% more shared NPU memory.
Graphics performance is another major difference between the two chips. The Extreme variant adds dedicated Adreno matrix cores for AI workloads, 18MB of High Performance Memory and Adreno Neural Fusion, which combines AI processing with graphics features such as super resolution and frame generation.
Qualcomm claims Neural Fusion can cut power consumption by as much as 40% in its internal Dragon Alley testing while maintaining high frame rates and image quality.
The Extreme platform also targets professional-grade mobile video production. It supports 8K video recording at 60fps and 4K slow-motion video at 240fps, while Qualcomm claims the platform delivers four times the video processing throughput of its predecessor. APV support is also included for higher-end video workflows.
Connectivity is handled by Qualcomm’s X105 5G Modem-RF system and FastConnect 8800 platform. Qualcomm says the new modem architecture is designed with the transition toward 6G in mind.
With the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Elite Extreme Gen 6, Qualcomm is continuing to push flagship smartphone silicon beyond traditional CPU and GPU performance. The new generation places an equally strong emphasis on on-device AI, advanced graphics and increasingly capable camera and video systems.
