PlayStation To Remove 551 Purchased Movies, Are Games Next?

PlayStation is facing renewed criticism after confirming it will remove hundreds of previously purchased movies from customers’ digital libraries, once again highlighting the risks associated with buying digital content.

Sony has announced that from 1 September 2026, 551 films distributed by StudioCanal will no longer be accessible through the PlayStation Store in the United Kingdom. Once removed, customers who paid for the movies will permanently lose access to them, with no refunds, compensation or option to download a permanent offline copy.

Among the best-known titles affected are Terminator 2, Apocalypse Now, Rambo: First Blood, Moonlight, Pan’s Labyrinth, From Dusk Till Dawn, Cliffhanger and The Deer Hunter. Sony has published the full list of affected titles on the PlayStation website.

The move follows a similar decision in 2022, when PlayStation removed more than 300 purchased films from customer libraries in Germany and Austria. Sony closed its digital video store in 2021 but assured customers they would continue to have access to movies they had already purchased on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.

In a notice to customers, Sony said the latest removals are the result of changes to its content licensing agreement with StudioCanal.

The announcement has reignited debate over what consumers actually own when they purchase digital media. Unlike physical discs, digital purchases are generally licensed rather than sold outright, meaning continued access can depend on agreements between publishers, distributors and digital storefronts.

The same principle also applies to digital games purchased through the PlayStation Store. Sony’s terms and conditions state that software is licensed rather than sold, granting customers a limited, non-exclusive and non-transferable licence to use the software for personal purposes. While there is no indication PlayStation intends to remove purchased games, the licensing terms mean digital ownership differs significantly from owning a physical copy.

The issue has attracted greater attention in recent years as governments and consumer advocates examine how digital purchases are marketed. In California, legislation introduced in 2025 requires digital storefronts to clearly disclose that customers may only be purchasing a licence rather than permanent ownership, unless a permanent offline copy is provided.

For Australian consumers, there is currently no indication that the latest StudioCanal removals will affect local PlayStation accounts. However, the decision serves as a reminder that digital purchases remain subject to licensing agreements that can change over time.

The situation also reinforces the continuing appeal of physical media. Although buying a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray often costs more upfront than purchasing a digital copy, owners retain permanent access to the film regardless of licensing changes. Physical discs also continue to offer the highest available picture and audio quality for home entertainment enthusiasts.

As more movies, television shows and games move towards digital distribution, the latest PlayStation announcement is likely to intensify calls for greater transparency around what consumers are actually buying when they click the purchase button.
