Sony’s PlayStation 6 may continue the trend of modular hardware with a detachable disc drive, according to industry sources.

This marks a potential shift from the all-digital or fixed-disc options that have divided gamers in previous years.

Reliable leaker Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, who previously revealed the PS5’s detachable disc drive, claims Sony is firm on carrying the feature forward for the PS6.

The move would let players choose between a digital-only console or one that supports physical media, without forcing a permanent hardware decision at purchase.

The strategy follows the PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim era, where Sony introduced detachable drives, giving users the flexibility to add or remove the disc unit as needed.

In contrast, Microsoft’s recent Xbox Series models have abandoned physical drives altogether.

For gamers who prefer discs, the PS6’s detachable drive could support Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray playback, keeping movie collections viable even as discs decline across the wider electronics market.

However, like the current PS5, the drive may require online authentication via Sony’s servers, a potential issue if these services are ever discontinued.

Reports also suggest the PS6 will feature a cleaner, more streamlined design compared with the PS5.

The modular approach could make repairs and upgrades simpler, as players could replace a failed disc drive without sending the entire console for servicing.

Industry analysts note this hybrid strategy could allow Sony to balance manufacturing efficiency and consumer choice.

By producing a single base chassis with optional modular add-ons, Sony may reduce costs while catering to both digital-first players and collectors of physical games.

It follows rumours of a PS6 Portable aimed at competing with the Nintendo Switch 2, reportedly offering console-level performance with docked mode, backwards compatibility with PS4 and PS5 games, and a 1080p screen.

The PS6 is expected to launch in late 2027 or 2028, though details remain unconfirmed.
