The man who crudely attempted to extort money from Optus customers impacted by last September’s data breach has avoided a prison sentence.

20-year-old Dennis Su was sentenced to 100 hours of community service, and an 18-month community correction order, after he sent threatening text messages to 92 Optus customers.

Su obtained the numbers from the data dump released shortly after the hack, demanding ransom payments of $2,000.

Su threatened the data would be used nefariously in other financial crimes if the victims didn’t pay up.

The Australian Federal Police believe that not one person actually fell for the scam and paid Su.
