Older Apple TV Models Miss Out On tvOS 27 Upgrade
Apple has confirmed that two older Apple TV models will miss out on its next major software update, with tvOS 27 only set to support newer Apple TV 4K devices.
The Apple TV HD, released in 2015, as well as the first-generation Apple TV 4K, released in 2017, will not receive tvOS 27 when it launches later this year.
The move marks the first major Apple TV compatibility cut-off in several years.
The Apple TV HD has received major tvOS updates for more than a decade, while the original Apple TV 4K has been supported for close to nine years.
Both devices will continue to operate for streaming apps and existing features, but they will no longer receive major software upgrades or new tvOS features. Apple may still issue smaller bug-fix or security updates.

As reported yesterday, tvOS 27 is focused heavily on performance improvements, with Apple claiming supported Apple TV boxes will see apps launch up to 30% faster, alongside smoother system navigation and interface animations.
The update also includes faster AirPlay connections, smarter download management, a redesigned Podcasts app, Hi-Res Lossless support in Apple Music and improved HomeKit integration.
Support will be limited to the second-generation Apple TV 4K released in 2021 and the third-generation Apple TV 4K released in 2022.
The decision comes amid ongoing speculation that Apple is preparing a new Apple TV 4K model for release later this year.
A hardware refresh could be needed to support more advanced Siri and Apple Intelligence features, as well as higher-performance gaming.
The public rollout of tvOS 27 is expected around September, alongside Apple’s wider operating system updates.
