Nvidia’s Shield TV has become increasingly difficult to find in the US, with both versions of the popular streaming box now unavailable. However, Nvidia says the shortage doesn’t mean the Shield is being discontinued.

The Nvidia Shield TV Pro is currently listed as “out of stock” on Nvidia’s US website, while the cheaper standard Shield TV has disappeared from the company’s online store altogether. Retail availability has also dried up, prompting speculation about the future of the ageing streaming device.

Nvidia has played down those concerns, saying the Shield is simply “out of stock due to demand.”

That suggests the company isn’t ready to retire the Shield just yet. The streaming box also continues to receive software updates despite the current hardware having been on the market for several years.

There could eventually be new hardware, too. Nvidia said earlier this year that it was considering an updated Shield with support for AV1, HDR10+ and expanded Dolby Vision capabilities, while also committing to continued software support for existing devices.

The shortage comes as component supply problems continue to affect the wider streaming device market. Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku and, most recently, Google TV Streamer have all been hit by price increases.

So far, Nvidia has avoided following the same path with the Shield, although limited availability could make finding one increasingly difficult.

Australian buyers still have an option. The Nvidia Shield TV Pro remains available from JB Hi-Fi for A$378, while Nvidia Shield TV is available for A$268 meaning the shortage has yet to completely reach the local market.

For now, the Shield’s disappearance in the US appears to be a stock issue rather than the end of Nvidia’s streaming box. And with the company previously discussing potential new hardware, the long-running Shield platform may still have some life left in it.
