News, Nine In Streaming Talks

With Disney expected to enter the Australian video market later this year, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp outfit has reportedly approached Nine, now owner of the former Fairfax publications, about setting up a video streaming partnership involving Nine’s Stan and Foxtel, the latter jointly owned by News and Telstra.

News Corp previously tried dipping its toes into streaming with the now-inoperative Presto, a joint venture between Seven West Media and Foxtel, according to a B&T report.

Sources close to Nine are said to have described conversation around the potential partnership with News as “general” and that there are several other companies also looking to make a deal.

B&T also notes speculation that Disney may partner with Stan in order to benefit from Stan’s existing subscriber base, rather than launch an entirely new Australian platform.
