New GFK COVID-19 Service But Don’t Bank On Accurate OZ Data

European research group GFK has established a dedicated online resource centre to try and flog COVID-19 data, the only problem is that Australia’s three largest appliance and consumer electronics retailers have stopped the research Company from collecting data on their sales, customers and supply chain information.

JB Hi Fi, Harvey Norman and The Good Guys have refuse to supply GFK with information or data, due to fears critical sales information will fall into the hands of their competitors.

Between them these three retailers account for of 75% of all appliance sales in Australia and a major share of the consumer electronics market.

GFK claims that their new COVID 19 operation centre, is updated on a regular basis, and will offer resources including reports, webinars, infographics, blog posts, press releases and podcasts, that cover global data, as well as data specific to regions around the world including Europe, the US, APAC and Middle East.

There was no mention of Australia or whether China and Japan are included in the APAC data which is where Australia fits.

They have not said how much this service will cost or how they will get information on the sales being achieved online by the likes of JB Hi Fi, Harvey Norman and The Good Guys.

Ironically the Company has partnered with Appliance Retailer in an effort to distribute the questionable data about appliance sales.

As for the data being offered they claim that an example, is their ‘COVID-19: Shopping behaviour in times of crisis’ report provides insights on fears and actions being taken during the crisis, the impact on cross country buying behaviour and adapting to the new normal after the ‘panic phase’.

This is a statement that appear to be more about Europe than Australia as we have very little “Cross Country’ buying and most States right now are banning cross Country travel.

The research Company went on to claim “To help navigate these challenging times, GfK has set up a dedicated resource centre to keep you all informed of the latest trends and consumer insights throughout the global pandemic. In times like these, we are looking to help our valued partners get the insights and data they need so please reach out to your GfK account handler for more information or any other questions we can help with.”
