Netflix has removed the ability of users to cast shows from their mobile devices to most TVs. Instead, users will need to use the Netflix app on their device or TV.

There are exceptions, mainly devices that don’t have their own physical remote control: Chromecast 3rd generation or older (which did not come with a physical remote), Google Nest Hub Smart Display, Select cast-enabled Vizio TVs, Select cast-enabled Compal TVs.

The streaming service said: “Netflix no longer supports casting shows from a mobile device to most TVs and TV-streaming devices. You’ll need to use the remote that came with your TV or TV-streaming device to navigate Netflix.”

It’s not the first time Netflix has withdrawn casting features without warning. It removed Apple Airplay support in 2018.

Netflix did not forewarn users or offer any explanation about the change.

But the move does give Netflix more power over the user experience such as ad choice, tracking, device-level features and monetisation. It can dictate playback rules. The change may also help Netflix better prevent an account being shared across households.
