Microsoft To Launch New Surface PC’s As They Attempt to Break 3% Market Share

Microsoft whose share of the PC market is less than 3% is set to have another crack at growing share with the big software Company set to hold a launch event in New York in mid September where several new Surface PC’s, Microsoft accessories and updates to Windows 11 are tipped to be launched.

Microsoft and their Surface notebooks have never managed to take more than 2.1% market share of PC shipments, according to an estimate from technology industry researcher Gartner.

Lenovo has a 25% share of the market, while HP has 19% and Dell has 18%, respectively.

Speculation is that Microsoft has been working on a Surface Go 4, Surface Laptop Studio 2, and Surface Laptop Go 3 devices with retailers in Australia already told of a pending launch in the last quarter.

Windows Central recently reported that the updated Surface Laptop Studio 2 will ship with Intel’s latest processors, a more powerful GPU, and an improved selection of ports.

In Australia Microsoft sale of Surface hardware devices have been going backwards with the Company who sells Windows OS and Microsoft Office licenses unable to take advantage of their dominance of the PC software market.

ChannelNews understands that the business has postponed a Surface Go 4 with an Arm processor in favor of an Intel one instead.

The Surface Go 3 is rumored to ship with Intel’s 12th Gen processors and an improved base-level configuration.

Microsoft’s “special event” will be the first it has held since it changed its hardware portfolio amid layoffs earlier this year.

The Verge claims that those changes resulted in no more Microsoft-branded mice, keyboards, and webcams, with the company focusing on the Surface brand instead.

It will be interesting to see if Microsoft has any new Surface-branded accessories this year, particularly webcams.

The event could also include details on the next big Windows 11 update.

Microsoft revealed earlier this year that it’s planning to release a September update for Windows 11, which will include native support for RAR and 7-Zip files, a new settings homepage, a better volume mixer, and early access to Windows Copilot.

Surface “Flickergate” Still A Problem

It was only a few months ago that Microsoft was hosing down problems with their Surace laptops after it emerged that hundreds of Surface Pro 4 owners have been complaining about screen flickering issues on their tablets.

Microsoft’s support forums were awash with issues, with owners complaining of flicker problems.

ChannelNews understands that the problem is still occurring with most affected devices out of warranty. D

Dubbed “Flickergate,” the Verge at the time reported that over 1,600 Surface Pro 4 owners have experienced the screen flickering problems.

The flickering appears to be a hardware issue, which occurs after the device heats up during use.

“We are aware that some customers have experienced a screen flicker on Surface Pro 4 and are monitoring the situation closely,” says a Microsoft spokesperson, in a statement to The Verge.

Customers still being impacted by the problem are urged to contact Microsoft support.”
