LG, Samsung To Tussle Over Gaming Monitor Specs At CES 2024

Gaming monitor refresh rates loom as the new specs battle ground between LG and Samsung. The two Korean electronics giants are going head-to-head ahead of the global Consumer Electronic Show (CES) due to start next week.

While monitor resolution and quality are all important, the ability of a monitor to refresh the screen ahead of our opponent allows for smoother gaming and could offer a competitive advantage. It’s where LG has taken the lead.

Two weeks ago, LG announced its new gaming monitors including one with a dual refresh rate that can be tweaked to an incredible 480 Hz. That’s eight times the refresh rate of standard desktop monitors. The UltraGear 32GS95UE works in two modes; one is as a 4K OLED monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate, and the other with a 480Hz refresh rate but lower 1080p screen resolution.

The dual mode setup means the monitor is suited both to home theatre use at 4K, and to gaming at 480Hz. For many, that could be an attractive proposition.

LG is also offering 39-inch and 34-inch alternatives, the UltraGear 39GS95QE and UltraGear 34GS95QE with a widescreen 21:9 aspect ratio. They offer a compromise of a 3440 x 1440 resolution and 240Hz refresh rate.

Samsung also is showcasing three high resolution OLED gaming monitors, but none of them match the super fast 480Hz refresh rate that LG’s 32-inch model does.

The Odyssey OLED G8 (G80SD) is a 32-inch, flat screen, 4K monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate. It is ultra thin at 3.9 millimetres with a peak brightness of 450 nits. There’s the ultra-wide Odyssey OLED G9 – a 49-inch curved monitor with a 32:9 aspect ratio and DQHD resolution (5120×1440), and the 27-inch QHD (2560×1440) monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 360Hz refresh rate. All have metal-height adjustable stands.

Samsung says the three displays feature OLED Glare-Free technology that minimises light reflections, and a feature called VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 that it says deliver incredible details and vivid colours independent of the game or content being displayed. You get two HDMI 2.1 ports, a USB hub and a DisplayPort 1.4 input.
