JBL Launches New Cinema SB Soundbar Range With Foldable Design

JBL has launched a new range of Cinema SB soundbars that introduces a foldable design and allows compatible JBL portable speakers to be used as wireless rear surround channels.

The new Cinema SB MK2 range is made up of four models, the SB510MK2, SB550MK2, SB580MK2 and flagship SB595MK2. The range is designed to provide an easier, more affordable route into immersive home-cinema audio.

The standout feature is the soundbar’s ability to fold into a U-shape on three of the models. JBL says the design reduces the packed volume of the soundbar and subwoofer combination by up to 20%, making the products easier to transport while reducing packaging requirements.

JBL is also introducing SurroundPlay, a proprietary technology that allows two compatible JBL portable speakers to be connected wirelessly to the soundbar and used as rear surround speakers.

At launch, the JBL Flip 7 is the compatible portable speaker specified by JBL. This means existing owners of two Flip 7 speakers could add them to the Cinema SB system rather than purchasing a separate pair of dedicated rear speakers.

The four soundbars differ in their audio configurations and features.

The top-of-the-range SB595MK2 uses a 3.1.2-channel configuration, including two up-firing drivers and a wireless 6.5-inch subwoofer. JBL says it supports Dolby Atmos and includes HDMI input and eARC connectivity.

The SB580MK2 also supports Dolby Atmos and features a 6.5-inch subwoofer, while the SB550MK2 has a wireless 5.25-inch subwoofer. The entry-level SB510MK2 incorporates its bass system into the soundbar itself.

All four models include a dedicated centre channel designed to improve dialogue clarity. Bluetooth and Auracast connectivity are also supported.

The range offers an accessible home-cinema upgrade option for consumers.

The foldable construction also reflects a growing focus on packaging and ease of transport in consumer electronics.

Australian pricing and availability have not yet been announced but the models in the range are priced between €199.99 and €449.99 in Europe.
