HDMI 2.2 Launches with Ultra96 Cables, Doubling Bandwidth for Next-Gen Displays
The HDMI Forum has finalised and released the full specifications for HDMI 2.2, paving the way for the next generation of ultra high-definition video and audio.
First unveiled at CES 2025, HDMI 2.2 dramatically boosts performance, increasing maximum bandwidth from 48Gbps to 96Gbps.
To make it easier for consumers to identify compliant products, all certified HDMI 2.2 cables must carry the new ‘Ultra96’ label.
The new spec extremely high resolutions resolutions and refresh rates, including 4K at 480Hz, 8K at 240Hz, 12K at 120Hz, and even up to 16K at 60Hz.
It will also support uncompressed, full chroma formats for 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 240Hz, with 10-bit and 12-bit colour depth.

A key new feature is the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), designed to enhance audio-video sync, especially in setups with AV receivers or soundbars where latency issues are more likely.
Each Ultra96 cable must be individually tested and certified by length to ensure compliance, and the Ultra96 label will be required directly on the cable.
While HDMI 2.1 has been around since 2017, many devices still do not fully utilise its capabilities. The new version is designed to future-proof home entertainment as TVs, projectors, and gaming consoles advance to higher resolutions.
Manufacturers are expected to begin rolling out HDMI 2.2-compatible devices and Ultra96 cables later this year.
