Samsung Electronics’ subsidiary Harman has acquired German automotive tech startup Apostera, hoping to further increase its lead in the connected vehicle space.
Samsung says Harman will harness Apostera’s specialty in augmented reality and mixed reality software solutions to further diversify its in-vehicle offerings.
“Harman is dedicated to delivering in-car experiences with the speed and flexibility of consumer technology together with the reliability and performance of automotive-grade solutions,” said Christian Sobottka, Harman’s automotive division president.
“By seamlessly blending AR with the physical environment, Apostera’s mixed reality solution furthers this goal, transforming any display in the car into a richly contextual experience.”
Harman has battled through shipping bottlenecks and components shortages to post record profits of late, clearing A$701 million in operating profits last year. This is almost double its 2019 figures.
Samsung acquired Harman in 2017 for A$11.2 billion – a canny investment given this market is a burgeoning one. Harman has provided in-cabin tech for BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
