Hackers Attempt To Blackmail Disney Over Leaked Films

According to reports by the Hollywood Reporter, an unidentified group of hackers are attempting to release an upcoming Disney movie unless the studio pays up.

Walt Disney CEO BobĀ Iger made public the existence of the escapade this week, during a meeting with ABC employees.

He says the company will refuse to accede to the hacker’s demands and is currently working with federal investigators to investigate the issue.

Early speculation suggested the stolen film was the new Star Wars film. However, it is now believed to be the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

The hackers, demanding to be paid “an enormous amount” in Bitcoins, are threatening to release five minutes of the film online, followed by additional 20-minute increments until their demands are met.

The news echoes a similar scenario that unfolded last month, where hackers released the latest season of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black.

More to come.
