Google has rolled out an update to Maps featuring AI-powered predictions for EV charger availability, along with an overhauled Explore tab and expanded Gemini integration.

The new tool shows “how many chargers will likely be available upon your arrival” using AI and real-time charger availability data to predict open chargers at specific times.

Google says this helps users “avoid lines and save time.”

While Maps already showed EV charger locations, it previously couldn’t indicate availability, meaning drivers could arrive to find queues waiting.

The charger tracker launches next week via Android Auto and cars with Google built-in only.

The updated Explore tab makes finding curated lists from local influencers and companies like OpenTable easier.

Users swipe up to see “trending and popular restaurants, activities, and sights near you.”

The feature rolls out globally this month on Android and iOS.

Google is expanding Gemini AI integration, with the chatbot providing “know before you go” tips before visiting restaurants, hotels, concert venues, and other locations.

Google describes Gemini as “having a knowledgeable guide show you the way.”

The AI-powered tips feature is already available for many US users on Android and iOS.

Reviewers can now change display names when providing feedback to local businesses, using names like “Eager Elf” or “Julia Loves Sweets” while reviews remain linked to Google accounts.

Google Maps recently added live lane guidance for Polestar 4 owners and is coming to Garmin smartwatches.

The EV charger availability feature addresses a key pain point for electric vehicle owners: uncertainty about charging station availability.

Range anxiety and charging infrastructure remain barriers to EV adoption, with drivers often uncertain whether chargers at their destination will be occupied.

Electric vehicle ownership in Australia continues growing, with government incentives and expanded charging infrastructure supporting adoption.
