Google is widening access to its Gemini-based smart home system, bringing the updated platform to 16 additional countries including Australia, the UK and Japan. The feature is not enabled automatically, with users required to activate it through the Google Home app.

The expansion reflects a broader shift in Google’s approach to smart home control, with Gemini positioned as a more advanced alternative to the older Assistant platform. Recent updates have focused on improving speed and responsiveness, with Google claiming latency for common commands has been reduced by up to 40 per cent.

Beyond faster responses, the system is designed to handle more natural language. Users can issue less rigid commands, such as describing lighting preferences in everyday terms, while also making more precise adjustments to connected devices.

Additional features include real-time searches of Nest camera footage and smarter alarms linked to events. Support for supervised accounts is also being introduced, allowing families to manage access for children.

While Google Assistant remains available, the continued rollout of Gemini suggests a gradual transition towards a more conversational and context-aware smart home experience.
