Google has rolled out a new convenience feature for mobile users that makes joining group video calls faster and more smoothly. After launching on desktop computers last year, Google’s automatic room detection for Meet is now being introduced on Android and iOS, with availability expanding gradually over the next fortnight.

The tool is designed for situations where multiple people are gathered in the same meeting room. Instead of manually selecting companion mode, the system detects ultrasonic audio signals picked up by a device’s microphone and automatically connects the user to the shared Meet session. By recognising that several participants are in the same physical space, it also helps prevent audio feedback and echo issues that can disrupt group calls.

The automatic room check-in capability is now supported within both Google Meet and Gmail apps on mobile. Users will need Meet version 336.0 on Android or iOS, or Gmail version 2025.12.01 on Android and 6.0.251201 on iOS, for the feature to function.

Google said the update is available to all Google Workspace customers as well as Workspace Individual subscribers, extending a feature that was previously limited to laptops and desktop systems to smartphones and tablets.
