Google Assistant Coming To Sonos Speakers In Oz This July

After teasing the integration for many months, Google has announced the official launch of its smart assistant to Sonos speakers from today, with Australia set to receive the update in July.

According to a release from Google, the integration will begin in the US and “will expand support to the UK, Germany, Canada, Australia, France, The Netherlands and more over the coming months.”

Ausdroid is reporting that Sonos will launch the new feature here in Australia in July.

Google Assistant voice control will be supported on both a Sonos One or Beam soundbar via a software update.

All other Sonos speakers will be controllable via a Google Assistant-enabled device like a smartphone, smart speaker, or Smart Display.

According to reports, at launch, it will not support Voice match, interpreter mode or calling. Likely these will be added with future updates.

As previously reported, the move has been a long time coming with further rumblings stirred following its demonstration at CES 2019.

Sonos has struggled to remain profitable, in its Q2 results the company reported floundering sales for Play:1 speaker which has struggled against offerings from JBL, Ultimate Ears, and more.

Last week Sonos has reported sales of their speakers were down 16%, but the Beam soundbar experienced a 57% jump in sales.

Sonos appears to be banking on Google Assistant integration to bring more people to its platform.

Whether it will measure up to the vast amounts of Google Assistant speakers already available on the market, remains to be seen.
