Wired earphones are experiencing an unexpected revival among celebrities and Gen Z users, with stars including Bella Hadid, Harry Styles, Charli XCX, and Emma Watson recently photographed using traditional corded alternatives to wireless devices.

The trend appears to reflect broader nostalgia for pre-digital technology, similar to recent revivals of flip phones and Polaroid cameras.

Dr Omar H Fares, a lecturer at Toronto Metropolitan University’s Ted Rogers School of Retail Management, attributes the shift to “yearning for an idealised version of the past” and increasing privacy concerns.

Actor Paul Mescal has openly expressed his preference for wired earphones despite acknowledging they’re “old-fashioned,” citing practical concerns about wireless devices falling out of his ears.

Singer Dua Lipa favours wired alternatives because “I don’t have to charge them,” highlighting the convenience factor that appeals to many users.

The celebrity trend has resonated with younger audiences on social media platforms, with TikTok users expressing frustration with wireless earphones.

User @aaliya_allwood asked followers, “Is anyone else just so over the AirPods?” receiving numerous supportive responses citing issues with device loss and poor fit.

Comments from Gen Z users highlight practical concerns, including frequent loss of wireless earbuds, poor ear retention, and charging requirements.

Many report switching back to wired alternatives as “the best decision” they’ve made regarding audio devices.

Since Apple introduced AirPods in 2016, wireless earphones have dominated the consumer audio market, with most technology brands offering wireless alternatives ranging from over-ear designs to compact in-ear models.

However, the celebrity embrace of wired alternatives suggests changing consumer priorities beyond mere convenience.

Dr Fares connects the trend to broader Y2K fashion revival and vintage technology adoption, including the return of disposable cameras.

He explains that “nostalgia marketing has become a recognised marketing strategy” as companies leverage positive memories associated with past technologies.

The wired earphone revival also coincides with growing concerns about digital overwhelm and privacy, with some users viewing older technology as part of a “digital detox” approach to modern life.

While wireless earphones offer obvious convenience advantages, including freedom of movement and device integration, wired alternatives provide benefits including consistent audio quality, no charging requirements, and a lower cost of replacement.

The lack of battery degradation and reduced risk of loss also appeals to cost-conscious consumers.

The celebrity adoption of wired earphones demonstrates how fashion and cultural influence can override purely functional technology choices, similar to how vintage cameras gained popularity despite smartphone camera superiority.
