Former Google Australia Boss Slams $1Bn Railway Plan

Former CEO of Google A/NZ, Maile Carnegie, pictured – now ANZ Bank’s head of digital matters – has been quick to criticise moves by Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce and Resources Minister – and Queensland senator – Matthew Canavan to persuade the Turnbull Government to offer a $1 billion loan to build a railway to the proposed Adani coal mine in Queensland.

Australia should look to growing industries rather than legacy industries with “limited growth prospects”, Carnegie told an Innovation and Science Australia (ISA) roundtable last week.

“There is so much excitement and so many new businesses and so many new industries ahead of us, and so there is a puzzlement as to why nations or companies are so fixated in continuing to fish in shallower and shallower ponds,” said Carnegie.
