Federal Government Catches Chinese Intelligence Officers Spying For Huawei, Products High Risk
Banned Chinese technology Company Huawei whose “high risk” products are still being sold at JB Hi Fi, The Good Guys and Amazon have been accused of trying to obstruct a Federal Government investigation.
The US Justice Department has overnight charged two Chinese intelligence officers, accusing them of attempting to obstruct a US investigation into Huawei.
In Australia Huawei was banned from supplying 5G network technology because of the risks associated with their technology and products.
Defendants Guochum He and Zheng Wang were accused of working on behalf of the Chinese government to obtain confidential information and trial evidence related to a Justice Department investigation into Huawei.
US politicians believe Australia were “right” in banning Huawei.
Mark Warner, one of the most senior Democrats in the US Congress, said he harbored deep concerns about the privacy and national security risks of popular Chinese-owned social media app TikTok, Huawei and several other Chinese businesses that manufacture Chine communication and networking products.
Among the Chinese products that are seen as high risk are TP Link routers and Eufy and Hikvision security cameras. These Companies have refused to comment in Australia as to whether they would refuse a request from the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese Government to supply information on Australian residents.
Warner warns that China’s growing technological dominance should “scare the heck” out of democratic nations such as Australia and is a more worrying short-term threat than its rapid military build-up, says the head of the high-powered United States Senate intelligence committee.
“This is not something you would normally hear me say but Donald Trump was right on TikTok years ago,”
Warner issued his warning during a visit to Australia to meet with local intelligence chiefs, politicians and businesspeople.
The US Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said overnight “This case exposes the interconnection between PRC intelligence officers & Chinese companies, and it demonstrates, once again, why such companies — especially in the telecommunications industry — should not be trusted to securely handle our sensitive personal data and communications,”
In the complaint, the US claims He and Wang attempted to recruit a law enforcement employee to work on behalf of the Chinese government
The US Government claims He and Wang attempted to recruit a law enforcement employee to work on behalf of the Chinese government and obtain information related to the US’s ongoing investigation against Huawei in Brooklyn, New York. But the individual was actually operating as a “double agent” on behalf of the FBI, the DOJ said.
Citing incidences of Chinese technology Companies spying the DOJ revealed that on one occasion, the employee gave the Chinese defendants a photo of a false classified document related to the Huawei case, the indictment said.
The official received $41,000 in Bitcoin after delivering the document.
The defendants repeatedly tried to bribe the employee with thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry.
“This was an egregious attempt by PRC intelligence officers to shield a PRC-based company from accountability and to undermine the integrity of our judicial system,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said during the press briefing.
Despite the crackdown around the world retailers such as Amazon, The Good Guys and JB Hi Fi is selling Huawei watches that can be used to track people’s movements.
Online retailers such as Mwave, Scorptec and Amazon are selling Huawei notebooks.
Over the last few years, the US has continued to crack down on Huawei, claiming that the company could pose a significant risk to US security and provide the Chinese government a backdoor into user data in markets such as Australia, Europe, the UK and the USA.
