During a Julien’s Auctions three-day auction event called the “Played, Worn, & Torn: Rock ‘N’ Roll Iconic Guitars And Memorabilia,” Eric Clapton’s “The Fool” guitar was sold to The Jim Irsay Collection for $1.95 million, setting a record for the most expensive Clapton guitar ever sold at auction.

“The Fool” was sold during a bidding war, which occurred live at the Hard Rock Café in Nashville, and was one of Clapton’s most recognizable guitars

According to Julien’s Auctions, the guitar was played by the world-renowned artist for some of his most remembered performances.

“The Fool” was first played on stage by the guitarist while touring with the rock band Cream, and Clapton is said to have created his “woman tone” sound on this particular guitar, which was unique to the musician.

The guitar is a 1964 Gibson SG electric guitar named after the Dutch art collective selected to custom paint it in a psychedelic finish.

Darren Julien, president and chief executive officer of Julien’s Auctions, said that selling “The Fool” was “like selling a Mona Lisa.”

“It is an instrument of great beauty of sight and sound that could only have been originally played by the one and only Eric Clapton,” he said.

Besides Clapton’s guitar, other items up for grabs were a previously owned and driven 1977 fully restored Lincoln Continental Mark V by Elvis Presley; a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray owned and driven by Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash; and Dolly Parton’s 1970s custom-made and stage-worn cape (sold for over $15,000).

Julien was pleased with how the auction went so far and that the Clapton guitar attained a historic, record-breaking sale.

“The auction was an exciting night with a world record achieved in its sale as the most expensive Clapton guitar ever sold at auction,” he continued.

The Nippon Music Foundation bought the most expensive instrument ever sold on record, the 1711 Stradivari cello, named after its former owner and cellist Jean-Louis Duport, for $20 million in 2008. According to sources, the cello has a dent, allegedly made by the boots of the notorious Napoleon Bonaparte.
