David Jones & Disney To Open Flagship Kids Store

David Jones has capitalised on the demise of Toys R Us, following a deal with Disney to build a mini theme park and retail kids wonderland inside its flagship Sydney store.

The agreement is set to intensify competition against Myer and broader e-commerce rivals.

Scheduled to open in November, the Disney-themed level will reportedly feature several distinct quadrants – e.g. a Star Wars, Winnie the Pooh and Marvel section.

The news follows the demise of Toys R Us earlier this year, and capitalises on the growth of consumer technology in the kids’ market.

As previously reported, JB Hi-Fi has seen sales spike following its Star Wars themed ‘toys’, whilst former Dick Smith Boss, Nick Aboud, has taken the helm at Kidstuff.

The news comes as part of David Jones’ $200 million redevelopment of its flagship 12-level store in Sydney CBD which is set to be completed by 2020.

As per The Australian, David Jones CEO, David Thomas, asserts the premium department store is aiming to do what online rivals cannot.

No information has been provided concerning the length of David Jones’ agreement with Walt Disney.

The Disney-themed kids space is said to feature a range of toys, apparel, games and a ‘nursery design service’.
