China’s latest AI models are turning up the pressure on US tech giants with launches set to rival OpenAI and Anthropic.

Chinese developers are accelerating the global AI race with two major open-weight model releases, Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 and Alibaba’s Qwen3.8.

Moonshot’s Kimi K3 is a 2.8 trillion-parameter model, while Alibaba’s Qwen3.8 has 2.4 trillion parameters. Both companies claim performance close to the latest US frontier models on several industry benchmarks.

Unlike most leading US AI models, both Chinese models are being released with open weights, allowing developers and enterprises to download, modify and deploy them.

The launches could increase competitive pressure on OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, particularly among those looking to reduce AI licensing costs or launch models on-premises.
