Samsung prove size matters for gaming monitors, with their CES 2023 showing including four additions to their Odyssey gaming line, from a 34″ mega-wide unit up to an 8K 57″ behemoth. They’ve also delivered two OLED monitors – a 34″ model and a 49″.
The OLED monitors use Samsung’s own QD-OLED panels, which we first saw in the Alienware 34 QD-OLED last year.
As far as these new monitors go, the Samsung Odyssey G95SC 49 should garner the most interest from serious gamers, taking the same form as the Odyssey Neo G9, but spicing it up with the OLED panel, giving you a 32:9 ultrawide monitor with an 1800R curve that basically stacks two 1440p monitors next to each other. Samsung call this “dual QHD”. The result is a total resolution of 5120 x 1440. You’ll also get the same impressive 240Hz refresh rate as the Neo G9.
Scaling back a bit is the Odyssey OLED 34 – a 21:9 ultrawide monitor with a 175Hz refresh rate. Both have a 0.1ms response time and HDR True Black 400.
Both are sporting a new design as well, with a wider stand, while the base shouldn’t take up as much real estate as the G8.
Meanwhile, spruiked since November as one of the first 8K monitors to impact the market, the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 8K adds even more to its rep than first impressions suggested.
To deliver the gaming delight of 8K resolution, it’s enabled by a DisplayPort 2.1, which boosts data transfer speeds to double the bandwidth. This just leaves the question of whether your PC can handle all those pixels. After all, only AMD’s latest GPUs support the feature.
That aside, the Neo G9 rolls out at 57″ with a 1000R curve putting two 4K displays next to each other, resulting in a total resolution of 7680 x 2160. Even with the enhanced resolution, you get a 1ms response time with a 240Hz refresh rate.
It may not be OLED, but this updated Neo G9 uses mini-LED backlighting to put out a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. It is certified by VESA for display HDR 1000 to deliver the goods in any game environment, from shadows to bright scenes.
The Odyssey Neo G9 and OLED G9 both include adaptive sync and AMD FreeSync Premium. They both also come with Samsung Smart Hub, giving users direct access to streaming video apps like Netflix, YouTube and Prime Video without having to go through your PC, and Game Hub which lets you stream games from Xbox and Nvidia GeForce Now. Both monitors come with USB-C charging up to 65W.
While wide aspect ratios are an inherent feature of the new Samsung Odyssey line, the 2023 model of the Neo G7 sticks to a traditional 16:9 aspect ratio, though it measures in at a sizable 43″, coming across more as a television with its 2.2-channel speaker system and Samsung’s smart TV operating system.
The Neo G7 is expected on the market in the next few months, with the Neo G9 and the two OLED monitors arriving later in the year.
