Breville has launched a new premium coffee machine designed to automate one of the more hands-on brewing methods, the pour over. It combines a built-in grinder with a robotic pouring system designed to replicate the movements of a barista.

Called the Spiral Luxe Auto Pour Over, the new machine is aimed at coffee drinkers who want freshly ground, pour-over coffee without having to manually measure, pour and time each stage of the brewing process.

The machine combines a grinder, conical dripper and articulated water spout that moves in a spiral pattern over the coffee grounds. Breville says the system is designed to mimic the circular pouring technique used in manual pour-over brewing.

Sitting in the premium filter-coffee category, the Breville Spiral Luxe Auto Pour Over auto functionality distinguishes it from conventional drip machines, while its programmable controls are designed to give enthusiasts greater control without needing to manually execute every stage of the brewing process.

The integrated grinder uses bespoke 40mm flat burrs, designed for whole beans. Once brewing begins, the machine controls the water delivery automatically, with Breville claiming its heating system can reach the required temperature quickly and maintain it throughout the brewing process.

Users can adjust the strength and volume of their coffee through the machine’s built-in display and controls. More experienced coffee drinkers can also use an Advanced Edit mode to customise variables like grind settings, brew ratio, water temperature and the time between individual pours.

Custom recipes can be saved and a Delayed Auto Start function means users can schedule a brew for a particular time. All of this could make the machine quite appealing to consumers who enjoy the flavour and brewing style of pour-over coffee but do not necessarily want to perform the process manually each and every morning.

The Spiral Luxe is part of a broader push by Breville into automated filter coffee. The company’s Australian range already includes the Luxe Brewer Thermal, which is currently listed at A$579. That machine offers one-touch brewing, custom temperature and flow-rate controls, cold brew, as well as both cone and flat-bottom filter options.

The new Spiral Luxe is priced at about US$600 in the US. Coffee-lovers in Australia, however, will need to wait to see if and when this new Breville machine will be available here with no information on local availability as yet.Â
