Bose is getting back into wired earbuds, but its latest pair comes with some decidedly modern features.

The company has announced the Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds, a new USB-C model that combines a traditional wired connection with active noise cancellation (ANC), lossless audio support and Bose’s digital signal processing technology.

Unlike wireless earbuds, there is no rechargeable battery to worry about. The earbuds connect to compatible devices using a 128cm USB-C cable and draw the power needed for ANC directly from the connected device.

Bose uses two microphones on each earbud to continuously monitor surrounding noise and reduce unwanted sounds.

Users can choose between three listening modes. Quiet Mode provides full noise cancellation, while Aware Mode allows outside sounds through so users can remain aware of their surroundings. ANC Off disables noise cancellation altogether.

For fit, Bose includes soft silicone ear tips in small, medium and large sizes, along with medium and large stability wings. The tips and wings can be mixed and matched to find a comfortable and secure combination.

Despite embracing the increasingly popular wired-earbud format, Bose has equipped the new model with its SoundDesign digital signal processing technology. The company says this produces crisp and clear sound while supporting lossless audio playback.

The earbuds can receive audio at different sample and bit rates, although playback output is fixed at 24-bit/48kHz.

Another benefit of the wired connection is low latency. Bose says this should keep audio and video closely synchronised when watching movies, gaming or creating content.

There is no dedicated app for controlling the earbuds. Instead, an in-line remote provides physical buttons for adjusting volume, controlling playback, handling calls and switching between ANC modes.

A separate microphone on the rear of the remote is used for voice calls. Bose says its design helps reduce noise caused by the remote rubbing against clothing, while allowing users to speak without having to hold the microphone close to their mouth.

The earbuds also carry an IPX4 water-resistance rating and come with a zippered carrying case.

Bose Premium Consumer Audio president Raza Haider said the company decided to revisit the category as wired earbuds enjoy what he described as a “cultural renaissance”.

“Technology has come a long way since our last wired earbuds, allowing us the opportunity to bring our latest advancements to the category and set a new standard for what wired earbuds can be,” Haider said.

The new wired earbuds arrive as Bose is also adding new connectivity features to its flagship wireless headphones. A recent firmware update for the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones Gen 2 introduces beta support for Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast, making them the first Bose headphones to support the latter technology.

Auracast essentially works like a Bluetooth radio station, allowing a single audio source to broadcast to multiple compatible headphones, earbuds or speakers nearby. Potential uses include listening to airport announcements, sharing audio in classrooms and public venues, or letting several people listen to the same TV without using its speakers. Bose is expected to bring Auracast support to more products in the future.

The Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds are priced at A$169.95 and are available to pre-order for MyBose customers. General availability begins October 15.

They will be offered in Black and White, along with a limited-edition Dewdrop Mint finish.
