Australia’s retail sector has entered a new era with the launch of the Australian Retail Council (ARC), consolidating the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and the National Retail Association (NRA) into a single, unified body representing retailers of all sizes.

ARC CEO Chris Rodwell (pictured below) said the organisation aims to elevate the profile of retail across the nation.

“ARC brings together the collective strength of two respected institutions into a single, powerful voice representing every retailer – from family-owned businesses to iconic national brands,” Rodwell said.

“Retail contributes $444 billion to the economy and employs 1.4 million Australians, making it our largest private sector workforce.”

The launch introduces the new ARC brand and its public campaign, “Let’s talk shop,” highlighting the sector’s role at the heart of communities and the national economy.

Rodwell said the council would champion retailers on issues ranging from crime reduction and economic reform to sustainability, technology adoption and regional support.

ARC will also provide members with a comprehensive suite of services, including workplace relations advice, legal and HR support, policy advocacy, research, training and networking events.

Rodwell added: “We aim to tell the story of retail across Australia, support business growth, and inspire more Australians to consider careers in retail. This sector leads the way in innovation, from AI and technology adoption to evolving customer experiences and supply chain management.”

A transitional board, formed from members of the former ARA Council and NRA Board, is now in place until ARC board elections later in 2026. Nicole Sheffield (pictured) has been appointed Chair, with Antony Moore as Deputy Chair.

Key leadership appointments include Fleur Brown as Chief Industry Engagement and Marketing Officer, Glenn Fahey as Chief Policy Officer & Chief Economist, Nathalie Rosette-Barber as Chief Operating Officer and Lindsay Carroll as Chief Legal and Industrial Relations Officer.
