Apple’s AirPods Max 2 With H2 Chip Arrive With Big Australian Price Rise
Apple has launched the AirPods Max 2, delivering its first substantial update to the premium over-ear headphones since the original model launched in 2020 – but Australian buyers will pay more for the refresh.
The new headphones add Apple’s H2 chip, which the company says enables up to 1.5 times more effective active noise cancellation, improved sound quality and a suite of intelligent features previously reserved for AirPods Pro.
Among the headline additions are Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation and Live Translation, alongside support for studio-quality audio recording and a camera remote function for iPhone and iPad users.

Apple says the AirPods Max 2 also gain a new high dynamic range amplifier for cleaner sound, improved bass consistency and more natural mids and highs. When connected via the included USB-C cable, the headphones support 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio and ultra-low latency playback, aimed at musicians, creators and gamers.
Despite the internal upgrades, the design remains largely unchanged, with the AirPods Max 2 arriving in midnight, starlight, orange, purple and blue.
For Australian customers, the biggest sting may be the price. While Apple has kept US pricing flat, the local recommended retail price has climbed by $100 to A$999 including GST.

That lifts the AirPods Max 2 further above key rivals from Sony and Bose, even as Apple positions the product as a more capable and intelligent version of its flagship headphones rather than a full redesign.
Orders open on 26 March through Apple’s Australian online store and the Apple Store app, with availability to begin early next month.
Apple is also touting environmental credentials, saying the AirPods Max 2 use 100% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, recycled polyester in the ear cushions and recycled gold plating and tin solder in Apple-designed printed circuit boards. Packaging is fibre-based and designed to be easily recyclable.
