Apple is expected to take a significant step in screen technology with its next generation of premium devices, according to a forthcoming report from ETNews citing supply chain sources.

The report claims the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will debut advanced LTPO-plus OLED panels, an upgrade that is said to improve power efficiency compared with current displays. Beyond battery savings, the technology is also expected to enable new hardware layouts, including placing the infrared sensor used for Face ID beneath the screen.

People familiar with Apple’s plans believe the company may go further by hiding the front-facing camera under the display as well. Those sources suggest this change would not come at the cost of image quality, addressing a key concern that has slowed adoption of under-display cameras in high-end smartphones.

If Apple moves ahead with LTPO-plus panels, the shift would have implications for its supplier base. The technology can currently be manufactured at scale only by Samsung Display and LG Display, which would effectively exclude Chinese supplier BOE from providing screens for the Pro versions of the iPhone. BOE is still expected to remain involved in producing displays for non-Pro models.

The same report indicates that Apple intends to extend the use of LTPO-plus screens beyond the iPhone. The redesigned M6 MacBook Pro is also tipped to feature the new panel technology, signalling a broader strategy to standardise more advanced and energy-efficient displays across Apple’s premium product range.
