Apple Plans iPad Assembly In India
NEW DELHI: The Indian Government’s computer export incentive plan has attracted Apple, along with reports that the US tech giant is planning to open an iPad tablet plant in the country.
India launched a US$6.7 billion plan to boost smartphone exports last year, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped up efforts to promote electronics manufacturing and create jobs.
Apple has steadily raised production of iPhones in India to lessen its dependence on Chinese manufacturing and took advantage of the scheme’s incentives through its contract manufacturers.
The success of the project has spurred the Modi Government to implement another incentive scheme to drive local manufacturing of IT products.
This will include a new outlay on tablets, laptops and servers worth up to 70 billion rupees.
But Apple wants a bigger budget of 200 billion rupees to be guaranteed before it commits to the scheme.
