Apple CEO Slams Spotify For Playlist Algorithms

Apple CEO, Tim Cook, has slammed Spotify for ‘draining the humanity out of music’, asserting the Swedish streaming giant relies too heavily on computer-based algorithms to create playlists.

As per Fast CompanyCook claims Apple Music – Spotify’s major rival – uses human ‘taste-makers’ to build playlists, according to mood, artists, genre and more.

He affirms such an approach respects art and craft over “bits and bytes.”

Cook claims the Californian-giant has made a conscious decision to instil a ‘human touch’ into music playlists.

Rivalry between Apple Music and Spotify has continued to accelerate in recent months, with commentators projecting Apple may overtake Spotify’s paid dominance sometime this year.

As previously reported, Apple Music recently surpassed 40 million paid monthly subscribers, with Spotify boasting 75 million paid subscribers.

In the US, Spotify’s has notched 2% user growth this year, whilst Apple Music has boomed 5%.

Overall, Spotify boasts around 170 million active users, and Apple Music around 50 million.

Cook claims Apple’s music division is “not in it for the money” – a fact mirrored by the company’s triumph over the trillion dollar value mark.
