After a long wait, Google has resumed the Android 14 update rollout for Chromecast with Google TV devices, including both 4K and HD models.

The update, initially launched in March but quickly pulled due to software issues, is now back and addressing previous problems.

Chromecast with Google TV originally shipped with Android 10 in 2020 and skipped versions 11 and 13, jumping directly from Android 12 to 14 with this update.

The new software, which weighs in at around 809MB for users upgrading from Android 12, brings enhancements including improved system stability, the January 2025 Android security patch, and optimisations promising a “snappier, more responsive TV experience.”

One highlight is the added support for Google’s new voice remote, which can now utilise the handy ‘Find My Remote’ feature and a customisable ‘Magic Button’ to streamline TV controls.

The update also resolves issues from the previous rollout, notably fixing problems with external drives and USB devices not working. However, some users have reported that Ethernet adapters and USB debugging still face challenges.

While Google has paused major Android updates for Chromecast’s successor, the Google TV Streamer, it continues supporting Chromecast with Google TV via system updates and server-pushed features like smart home controls and AI-powered movie summaries.

This update helps extend the life of the streaming device amid newer hardware releases. However, it comes as Google has cut 25% of its Google TV team and reduced its smart TV budget by 10%, shifting focus to AI and YouTube.
