Android 14 Brings Ultra HDR To Google Photos
It was announced by Google back in May that Android 14 would support Ultra HDR for photos and videos, which was first introduced in Android 14 Beta 2, supporting 10bit HDR images. Standard JPEG images were also claimed to be fully compatible with the update.
The primary change will be that Ultra HDR images can display on non-HDR and HDR screens, with the images in SDR on non-HDR screens.
Now the company are supposedly testing Ultra HDR support for Google Photos, coming from a new build code version (v6.51.0.561138754) noticed in Google Photos towards the end of August.
HDR provides better image and video quality than SDR, as it can showcase a wider range of colors and brightness.
Ultra HDR is expected to take advantage of a smartphone’s camera and display, keeping the JPEG format.
It’s been reported Google are working with companies like Qualcomm to optimise SoCs for Ultra HDR, and are expected to make Ultra HDR the default format for backing up, sharing, editing, downloading photos, and uploading.
