Amazon Opens First Manufacturing Line In India
Amazon will make devices in India for the first time, with the online retail giant to manufacture Fire TV Sticks through partner Foxconn at a new plant near Chennai.
Foxconn subsidiary Cloud Network Technology will make hundreds of thousands of Fire TV Sticks per year for the Indian domestic market, scalable to additional markets depending on local demand.
According to Amit Agarwal, Global SVP and Country Leader for Amazon India, the move demonstrates Amazon’s commitment to an Atmanirbhar Bharat, or “self-sufficient India”, a key aim of PM Narendra Modi’s government; Agarwal spoke with Shri. Ravi Shankar Prasad, Indian Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology and Law & Justice, to brief him on the move this week.

“We have pledged to invest US $1 billion to digitise 10 million small and medium businesses, help Indian businesses sell worldwide thereby enabling US $10B in cumulative exports, and create an additional 1MM jobs by 2025,” said Agarwal.
While Foxconn is a Taiwanese company, it has manufacturing operations in a number of countries including India, Malaysia, and mainland China.
