On the other side of the nation, drone delivery start-up Flirtey used one of its drones to help deliver a package of medicines to a pop-up health clinic in a remote area in rural Virginia.
But, since drones have a limited range, a manned aircraft owned by NASA carried the packages most of the way.
In mountainous Wise County, Flirtey’s drone took the medicine the final mile from the airport to the clinic, about a three-minute trip.
The US Federal Aviation Administration has barred general drone deliveries until new rules are formulated next year, but gave special approval for Friday’s demo.
