Coherent To Show Apple The Way
“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plan,” Apple said, repeating its usual retort on questions involving acquisitions.
The company didn’t say when it bought Coherent Navigation or how much it paid, but Coherent’s CEO Paul Lego says on his LinkedIn profile that he joined Apple’s maps team in January.
Coherent Navigation is working on “developing a commercial high-precision navigation service” based on satellite technology, according to Lego’s profile. He also said the company performed “classified and unclassified” work for the US Government.
Many observers are suggesting Apple may have bought the company to, among other things, improve its global Maps app, which is much improved but still lags well behind Google in accuracy.
