Intel Focuses On Smart Eyewear With Recon Acquisition

Intel Focuses On Smart Eyewear With Recon AcquisitionIntel signalled its intent to push further forward into the wearables market at CES this year, unveiling its Curie module, a button-sized hardware product for wearable technology, also announcing a strategic collaboration with sports equipment manufacturer Oakley, and has continued to establish itself within the market with the Recon acquisition.

Recon, which was founded in 2008, is the manufacturer of the Recon Jet, smart eyewear for sports and high-intensity environments.

Equipped with smartphone-class hardware and a display featuring Glance Detection technology, the Recon Jet is loaded with software allowing athletes, such as cyclists and runners, to see their performance metrics, including speed/pace, distance, duration, ascent/descent, heart rate and cadence.

“This acquisition gives Intel a talented, experienced wearable computing team that will help us expand the market for head-mounted display products and technologies,” Josh Walden, Intel New Technology Group senior vice president and general manager, stated in a blog post announcing the acquisition.

Recon will continue to produce products under its brand name, and will also partner with Intel’s New Devices Group to develop smart device platforms for a broader set of customers and market segments.

Dan Eisenhardt, Recon co-founder and CEO, noted the acquisition has “placed Recon in a uniquely advantageous position”, with Recon having access to the resources to continue to grow and able to draw on Intel’s extensive technology portfolio.
