Meta has dropped the price for its Meta Quest 2 virtual reality headsets due to lower demand than previously expected.

For Australians, this means the 256GB model is now A$719.95, down from the original RRP of A$789.95.

The Meta Quest Pro, aimed at businesses, will also see a substantial drop price, from A$2,200 to A$1,495.

Meta is, of course, denying the price drop is due to weakened demand, instead positioning this as a tactical move to introduce people to the wonder of VR.

“Our goal has always been to create hardware that’s affordable for as many people as possible to take advantage of all that VR has to offer,” the company announced on its blog.

Likewise, CEO Mark Zuckerberg claimed the move was so “more people can get into VR”, in an Instagram post.

We’re committed to building a successful VR market for developers, businesses, and creators to thrive in,” the company blog reads.

“VR is a powerful social platform and creative technology, and the more people with access to it, the better. Like you, we’re in this for the long haul. And we can’t wait to welcome even more people to the Meta Quest Platform for years to come.
