WhatsApp Aims At Slack Audience, With ‘Communities’ Feature

WhatsApp is launching a feature named ‘Communities’, aimed at turning the platform into a Slack-style experience.

Communities will allow users to pull many different chat groups under one umbrella, allow administrators to send messages to all the groups.

“We think Communities will make it easier for a school principal to bring all the parents of the school together to share must-read updates and set up groups about specific classes, extracurricular activities, or volunteer needs,” the company said in a blog post.

The feature will be tested in several countries later this year, before rolling out more widely.

WhatsApp is also toying with reactions to specific messages, and the sharing of larger files between users.
