Face recognition on the Samsung Note 8 is a hit and miss affair which is why I use a combination of fingerprint recognition and pattern, now reports are coming in that Apple Face ID is a “shamble” with journalists unable to get it to work at this week’s launch.
Unlike the Note 8 Apple is punting on their face ID as the main means to access their new iPhone X after the Company chose to eliminate finger recognition.
Now Apple has been forced to explain why its new facial recognition feature failed to unlock a handset during an on-stage demo at the iPhone X’s launch on Tuesday.
The company blamed the Face ID glitch on a lockout mechanism triggered by staff members moving the device ahead of its unveil.
Apple’s software chief dealt with the hiccup by moving on to a back-up device, which worked as intended.
But the hitch was widely reported.
On Tuesday, Apple introduced its own facial-recognition program, Face ID, that will unlock its new iPhone X. Now we will learn whether Apple was able to overcome such problems.
On the question of how their Face ID works Apple, has not respond to an interview request by WIRED who are investigating whether Apple has a problem on their hands.
Face ID uses an infrared camera to create three-dimensional models of its users’ faces, which, in theory, could prove more nuanced than previous two-dimensional systems.
Its website for the new iPhone X shows Face ID working with a person of colour. During its two-hour new product event, the company showed another face-detection feature—part of its automated portrait-lighting mode—working with people with a variety of skin tones. But we won’t know for sure how well Face ID works in the real world until enough iPhone X’s are in the hands of customers claims WIRED.
Solving these problems matters, and not just for Apple.
Several experts have said that there are technical reasons that previous facial-recognition systems failed to recognize black people correctly.
In the past Apple have tried to use Touch ID but they have struggled with this technology. This all seems to imply that the new flagship of the iPhone line-up probably won’t be getting Touch ID anytime soon, and that means the just introduced Face ID might be the future.
Microsoft released a version of facial recognition back in 2015 as part of the Windows 10 launch. The tech, which uses an IR camera to scan your face regardless of lighting scenarios, has achieved a measure of stability two years in—even if it will sometimes fail to read your face if you take the glasses off that you normally wear.
