Symantec Mulls Web Security Sale

Cybersecurity market leader Symantec is considering selling its Web site certification business in a deal that could fetch more than US$1 billion.

Selling the unit would extricate Symantec from a feud with Google over claims that it failed to properly validate Google certificates.

Symantec acquired most of its Web certification business in 2010, when it paid $1.28 billion to buy Verisign’s security business.

The unit banks about $400 million in annual revenue.
