Super Retail Talks Down Amazon Impact

Super Retail – the parent-company of the Rebel Sport, Supercheap Auto and BCF retail chains – has talked down the impact of international shopping giant Amazon on the Australian market.

As reported by Business Insider, Super Retail CEO Peter Birtles spoke at the Morgan Stanley 2017 Australian Emerging Companies Conference today and claimed the company’s businesses are strong and well-positioned to respond to the market disruption that arrival of Amazon will likely cause.

According to him, “our analysis concludes that market disruption will not be as detrimental to Super Retail Group as implied by some market commentary and the recent share price fall. ”

“The performance of our international peers in maintaining and growing operating margins despite competitive challenges provides confidence that Super Retail Group’s margin targets are achievable,” he says.

Birtles comments are at odds with those made by Bain & Co partner Yngve Andresen earlier this week, who called the arrival of Amazon “a once in a generation retail disruption.”
