Spotify’s ‘Car Thing’ Gets General Release

You may remember Spotify’s extremely limited-release ‘Car Thing’, which was basically a GPS-style touchstyle used solely for controlling and playing music or podcasts from Spotify.

The company tested a limited-release last October, available to those who’d added their names to a waitlist in April. Clearly, the demand for such an item was there, because Spotify has put the product on general release, for US$90.

You still need a mobile device with data to run the Car Thing, so it isn’t a standalone device by any means. But it’s a convenient tool, with hands-free control via a ‘Hey Spotify’ feature, and it is worth the price for those who don’t want to be playing with their phones while driving (you can cop a fine for that these days).

Unfortunately, the device is only available in the US as of now. We have contacted Spotify Australia to see if and when we’ll see this here, and will update this story once we know.
