Spotify ANZ Appoints New MD
Spotify has appointed former CEO of Slingshot Accelerator, Karen Lawson as its new Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand, a role that has been vacant since February.
Lawson will commence her new role on 24 June and will report to Spotify’s Global Head of Markets, Cecilia Qvist.
Prior to Slingshot, Lawson was CEO of careerone.com.au and spent eight years in various roles with Yahoo7 before finishing as GM of business developments and partnership in 2013.
She joins the company as it delves further into the podcasting space, after acquiring podcast studio Gimlet and podcast apps Anchor and Parcast, plus its recent partnership with Acast last year.
The Swedish music streaming service has also been increasing its advertising services, notably with the launch of its Ad Studio product to the Australian market in 2018.
Spotify recently became the first music subscription service to reach 100 million paid subscribers, its subscriber base growing 32 per cent YoY, but it still struggles to turn a profit.
In its Q1 report, it stated that it expects revenue from podcasts to “accelerate through 2019” via the use of targeting ads during ad-supported listening.
Spotify also pointed to voice speakers as a “critical area of growth” for the company, particularly for music and podcasts, and there are rumours circulating that it may be developing its own speaker.
