Speedo is moving deeper into wearable technology with SpeedoIQ, a new swim-tracking system designed to capture detailed performance data without requiring swimmers to wear a watch or use a heads-up display.

Unlike some smart swimming goggles that display information directly in front of the swimmer, SpeedoIQ uses a small removable tracking module that sits inside the company’s latest Vanquisher goggles. Data is synchronised with a companion app after leaving the pool.

The system can monitor pace, distance, breathing, head position and turn performance, giving swimmers a more detailed picture of their technique as well as traditional workout statistics.

Speedo says the technology can analyse different swimming strokes and provide information that could help users identify areas where their technique or performance could be improved.

One significant feature for competitive swimmers is approval from World Aquatics, meaning the wearable can be used during sanctioned competition. That potentially gives SpeedoIQ an advantage among serious swimmers who want to collect performance information without changing equipment between training and competition.

Speedo has deliberately chosen not to incorporate a transparent display into the goggles. Instead of presenting statistics while someone is swimming, the system concentrates on collecting information that can be reviewed afterwards.

That approach differs from established smart swimming products such as those from Form, which can display information including pace and split times within the swimmer’s field of view.

Whether swimmers prefer immediate feedback or Speedo’s less intrusive approach is likely to depend on how they train. Competitive athletes may appreciate being able to concentrate entirely on swimming, while others could find live pace information useful for maintaining performance throughout a session.

SpeedoIQ will also avoid another increasingly common feature of connected fitness products – a recurring subscription. Speedo says users will not need to pay an ongoing subscription to access the system.

However, several important details remain unknown. Speedo has yet to announce how much SpeedoIQ will cost or when it will become available to consumers.

Australian pricing and availability have therefore not been confirmed. More information is expected closer to the product’s commercial release.
