Sony has trademarked ‘True RGB’ in Japan and Canada, signalling the electronics giant’s preparation to launch LCD televisions featuring advanced RGB LED backlight technology, likely arriving in 2026.

The Canadian filing, verified by FlatpanelsHD, specifically registers ‘True RGB’ for “LED displays, television sets and televisions,” confirming the technology’s television focus.

The October trademark applications suggest Sony is finalising its marketing strategy for the new display technology.

The RGB LED technology promises significant improvements over conventional LCD displays, including enhanced colour volume, wider viewing angles and improved energy efficiency.

Sony demonstrated the technology to industry observers earlier this year, generating positive initial impressions.

Supply chain reports indicate Sony plans to incorporate RGB LED technology into its Bravia 7 II and Bravia 9 II models, with screen sizes ranging from 50 to 115 inches.

The televisions are expected to launch in 2026, maintaining Sony’s strategy of offering premium LCD models alongside its OLED range.

While Samsung has already branded its similar technology as ‘RGB microLED’, Sony’s trademark filing reveals its chosen marketing approach for competing in this emerging display category.

The timing positions Sony for potential announcements at CES 2026 in Las Vegas next month, where major television manufacturers traditionally unveil their latest models.

The technology represents a significant advancement for LCD displays, though true microLED TVs, which eliminate the LCD panel entirely, remain prohibitively expensive with visible module seams.

Sony continues its dual-technology strategy, developing both high-end LCD and OLED televisions, including WOLED and QD-OLED variants, to compete across premium market segments.
