SanDisk has unveiled the E31, a new portable USB-C SSD aimed at users who need fast, convenient storage for large files. The drive is designed for transferring data such as high-resolution photos, 4K video, and project files, and is set to launch in China on September 21.

Despite its focus on portability, the E31 packs a relatively fast USB interface into a compact enclosure. The drive measures approximately 85 x 45 x 10mm and weighs just 33.2 grams, making it easy to slip into a pocket, laptop bag, or sleeve.

The E31 is also designed to handle the demands of everyday travel. SanDisk says it can withstand drops of up to two meters, while its operating temperature range spans 0°C to 45°C. For storage, the SSD can tolerate temperatures from -20°C to 85°C.

The E31 uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, providing up to 10Gbps of bandwidth. SanDisk rates the drive for sequential read speeds of up to 1,000MB/s.

That makes it considerably faster for moving large files than conventional portable mechanical hard drives, which can be a significant advantage for photographers, videographers, and other users working with large datasets.

Connectivity is handled through a standard USB Type-C port, allowing the SSD to work with compatible PCs, tablets, and smartphones without requiring a proprietary connection.

The E31 supports Windows 10, macOS 13 and newer, Android 13 and newer, iOS 15 and newer, and iPadOS 15 or later. On iPad, users can browse and manage files directly through Apple’s Files app. SanDisk’s Memory Zone software provides additional file-management and backup features on supported devices.

SanDisk will sell the E31 in three capacities: 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB.

The 500GB version is priced at 829 yuan (approximately US$124) during the pre-sale period. The 1TB model costs 1,239 yuan (around US$184), while the 2TB version is priced at 2,199 yuan (approximately US$328).

Australian pricing has yet to be announced.

All models include a three-year limited warranty.

With its small footprint, USB-C connectivity, and claimed read speeds of up to 1,000MB/s, the E31 is positioned as a portable alternative for users who need more storage and faster file transfers without carrying a bulky external hard drive.
